Research and Gather Information:

We conducted user research to understand the needs and preferences of book lovers, analyzed competitors' websites to identify areas for differentiation, and studied industry trends to stay up-to-date with the latest innovations in book sales and marketing.

Competitor Analysis:

Wattpad is a popular online platform for writers and readers to publish, read, and discover stories in various genres, including romance, science fiction, fantasy, and fanfiction. As a competitor to our online book website, I have conducted a comparative analysis to determine the strengths and weaknesses of both platforms.

Strengths of Wattpad

  • Free access to stories: Wattpad is a free platform, with users able to read and share stories without paying any fees. This accessibility makes it an attractive option for readers who are looking for affordable or free entertainment options.
  • Large community of readers and writers: Wattpad boasts a massive community of over 90 million users, including both writers and readers. This large user base makes it an attractive platform for both new and established writers to share their work and reach a wider audience.
  • Wide selection of genres and stories: Wattpad offers a vast selection of stories in various genres, catering to a diverse range of reader interests. The platform's fanfiction section, in particular, is popular among young adult readers, with stories based on popular movies, TV shows, and books.

Weaknesses of Wattpad

  • Limited monetization options for writers: Wattpad's revenue-sharing program only offers payments to writers who generate significant engagement and views on their stories, meaning that many writers may not be able to monetize their work effectively.
  • Overwhelming selection of stories: Wattpad's vast selection of stories can also be overwhelming for users, with many stories to sort through and potentially miss out on hidden gems.

Analysis

Our online book website can learn from Wattpad's strengths, such as their large community of readers and writers, and the wide selection of genres and stories. However, we can also address some of Wattpad's weaknesses, such as providing better quality control measures and offering more flexible monetization options for writers.

In contrast to Wattpad, our online book website can also offer a more curated selection of high-quality books, along with additional features like the percentage count for when a user reads a book and the payment flow feature from when the percentage count gets to 10%. These features can incentivize users to purchase and read books, while also providing a more engaging reading experience.

Overall, by incorporating the strengths of Wattpad while addressing some of its weaknesses and offering unique features, our online book website can provide a competitive alternative for readers and writers looking for a high-quality and engaging online reading experience.

Creating User Personas

To create a user-centered design for StarlyBooks, we conducted thorough research to understand the needs and preferences of different types of book lovers. Based on this research, we developed user personas that represented various segments of the target audience, such as Book readers, Authors, and Crypto Enthusiasts.
These personas were detailed representations of our potential users, including their goals, interests, pain points, and behaviors. By developing these personas, we gained valuable insights into our users' needs, preferences, and motivations. We were able to use this information to inform the design of the website, ensuring that it was tailored to meet the specific needs of our target audience.
For example, we learned that Book readers tend to prefer a simple, easy-to-use interface that allows them to quickly find and purchase books, while Authors value platforms that enable them to showcase their work and connect with readers. On the other hand, Crypto Enthusiasts may have unique requirements for payment and security features.
By using these personas to guide the design process, we were able to create a website that was optimized for the needs of our target audience. We were confident that our design choices were informed by the needs of real users, leading to a more effective and user-friendly website overall.

Sketching and Wireframing

We began sketching different layouts and wireframes for the website, experimenting with different color schemes, typography, and visual elements. We focused on creating a website that was both visually appealing and easy to navigate, with a layout that was optimized for mobile and desktop users.

Final Design

We used the Figma software to create high-fidelity mockups that accurately represented the final design.
